Missincinatti: "A Hundred Years Ago"

Despite their tuneful qualities, all three members of LA's Missincinatti have impeccable freak-out cred as well. This project finds cellist Jessica Catron, guitarist Jeremy Drake (ex-Evangelista), and percussionist Corey Fogel (ex-Gowns) performing traditional sea shanties and labor songs. The band’s ultra-spare arrangements evoke the soul of folk music while making no attempt at historical accuracy. The players make music out of a collection of unlikely sounds, using whatever is around. Over the soft beating of waves, “A Hundred Years Ago” clinks and shuffles its way through an earworm melody driven by Catron’s voice, with Drake and Fogel slowly coalescing their watering can percussion into a chugging rhythm. It’s haunting, infectious, and beautifully recorded.
