Green Gerry: "Celery Salt (Spider Man Quit Fucking With Me)"

Supremely weird Athens singer/songwriter Green Gerry recently assembled a live band called The Jellyfish. He also sent over new demo called "Celery Salt (Spider Man Quit Fucking with Me)," which had about 20 seconds of unintended silence at the beginning (since removed) and some serious microphone clipping. Aside from that, it's probably the loveliest missive I've received from him thus far-- a cryptic prose-poem in seven stanzas, adorned equally by fingerplucked guitar, barely there sound washes, and the squeak of his left hand sliding up and down the frets. Gerry's refined a half-singing, half-speaking style that will appeal to people who like listening to Leonard Cohen's "Suzanne" on repeat; but his voice has timbre and lumosity all its own, and it's as magnetic on the senses as a UFO in the sky. Lyrics below, as per the artist's request. --Emilie Friedlander, Visitation Rites

Green Gerry: "Pupil Patterns Are Crazy" (Demo)

Athens, GA singer/songwriter Green Gerry, who recently assembled a live group called Green Gerry and the Gellyfish, was one of the first artists I ever posted about in these pages. It seems like a hundred musical micro-trends have come and gone in the interim, but you can't really get any more timeless than pretty, minor-key vocals over pretty, minor-key fingerpicking-- and the sheer simplicity of these existential floaters always feels like coming home. Sure, there's an undercurrent of weirdness in the mix; Green Gerry made a video for his last single, "I Am Getting Old," with footage from a fascist military pageant, and there are some video game sound effects on "Pupil Patterns Are Crazy" that bear no apparent relation to the track, in rhythm or psychic tone. But a love for idiosyncrasy is what got us into this business in the first place, and we're stoked that Olde English Spelling Bee just announced a 7" with Gerry in the not-so-distant future. --Emilie Friedlander, Altered Zones

Green Gerry: "Cozy Space Mugz"

Green Gerry’s Odd Tymes, a self-released, GarageBand-recorded digi-LP he recently sent my way, locks in to the more introspective side of summer. “Cozy Space Mugz” sends me back to July in Western Massachusetts — biking alone to a watering hole of uncertain name, running brown water through my toes, and turning a single song over and over in my mind as though it held the keys to the cosmos. Like Simon Finn, Alexander "Skip" Spence, and Dear Syd himself, Green Gerry doesn’t need more than a guitar, some drowsy vocal leans, and his own warped sense of the world to make everything around you — rocks, trees, computer chairs, you name it — start vibrating with slanted and enchanted truth.
