Altered Zones is proud to present some photo memories of our unofficial CMJ showcase at the New Museum last Saturday:
Dive

Last year, the inaugural Cropped Out Fest kicked off with a bang, featuring the likes of AZ favorites Julianna Barwick, Moon Duo, Spectre Folk, Fielded, and more. A celebration of all things fringe, the festival returns this year with an equally impressive lineup. Taking place the second weekend of November at a warehouse space in the funky Midwestern enclave of Louisville, Ky., Cropped Out is a low dough, all-ages barn burner that "aims to turn heads, if only for one weekend, toward the concentrated talents of those often omitted, overlooked, or cropped out of the bigger picture."
Just announced today is the inclusion of the legendary Scratch Acid, David Yow and David Wm. Sims' pre-Jesus Lizard supersonic freakout vehicle, and the scorched acid dub of Sun Araw. Some other heavy hitters include the warped electric folk of MV & EE, the haunting Angel Olsen, WFMU favorites Shit & Shine, Baltimore’s noise shamans Dope Body, reclusive ex-Harry Pussy medicine man Bill Orcutt, noise pop thrashers The Men, and a slew of killer regional and international under-the-radar acts.
Beyond just the festival, Cropped Out is a multi-city collective-- one that slings some crazy wax on the Sophomore Lounge imprint, promotes various events around the country, and was even responsible for that amazingly weird Internet puppet talk show from Hell that you may have seen when looking for that last Bill Callahan video. Follow them on Tumblr to keep up with all their happenings throughout the year. -- Kenny Bloggins, The Decibel Tolls
Visitation Rites teams with Vibes Management and Mutual Dreaming this Friday, August 26th in extravagant homage to Los Angeles' 100% Silk, the dance-centric campadelic Not Not Fun imprint founded by Amanda Brown of LA Vampires. Join us at a giant warehouse in Greenpoint, Brooklyn for performances by NYC-based members of the stable, disco-inspired DJ sets, and projections by Luke Wyatt and Aurora Halal. If you don't fall in love with everybody in the room by dawn, then you'll probably at least come home with a clearer grasp of the word "vibe" when used as a verb. RSVP at silkwarehousersvp@gmail.com for the address, and visit Facebook for more info. --Emilie Friedlander, Visitation Rites.
After wrapping up a second consecutive year in Chicago, vanguard Neon Marshmallow Fest has announced its geographic colonization of Brooklyn, NY. The three-day event kicks off Friday, October 14th, and will be housed by historic-mayonnaise-factory-turned-arts-and-music-venue Public Assembly, which boasts 4,000 sq. feet of absurd sound systems courtesy of the The Bunker, including a full-spectrum quad stereo. The roster lives up to its predecessors, featuring a slew of premier experimental acts, visuals from the likes of Yr Friend Matthew and Jon Williams & Rebecca Gaffney, and DJ sets by AZ editors Ric Leichtung and Emilie Friendlander (whose band, La Big Vic, is also playing). There are a limited number of complete passes available for purchase that will grant you access to every show, a full hour of open bar on Friday and Saturday, and all the associated afterparties. You'll have to use your resources to find the after-afterparties. Check out the line-up below. --Ian Pearson, Altered Zones
