A couple of updates from Neon Marshmallow Fest NYC, which kicks off tonight at Williamsburg's Public Assembly: Tim Harrington of Beardo fame will play his first-ever electronic solo set on Sunday, replacing Blues Control, who has dropped-out due to an illness. Patrick Russell of Mentalux is DJing tonight, Brian Turner from esteemed freeform radio station WFMU will take over the tables on Saturday evening, and DIY event organizer extraordinaire Todd P will follow suit on Sunday night. To tide us over, NM has sent over a new Xeno & Oaklander steamer, "Smoke Coke," from the event's tape compilation.

On Saturday, September 17th, Visitation Rites and Vibes Management present a night of deep moods and maximalist simplicity at Brooklyn's Shea Stadium. Witness a rare East Coast appearance by drone-driven San Francisco guitar duo Barn Owl after hearing the Branca and Chatham-inspired Noveller (New York's Sarah Lipstate) loop a single guitar into the sound of a dozen. Former GHQ guitar slinger Steve Gunn brings his minutely colored, raga-inspired blues-folk to the stage with drummer John Truscinski of X.O.4. renown, and Los Angeles singer/songwriter Universe opens the night with a mystery backing band. Travis from Pictureplane tipped us off to this weekend's Denver-based gathering of ambient noise, garage rock, and temple dance, called the TITWRENCH Festival. The third annual, female-centered DIY event celebrates all those who identify as women but is open to everyone. Activities run the gamut from workshops to yoga and love rituals to potlucks. Although the concert lineup includes a hodge-podge of genres (booty shakin' no wave, anyone?) all acts are united by a strong female stage presence. --Jasmine Zhu, Altered Zones

Tonight, Los Angeles bids adieu to Show Cave, one of its most vital and active DIY venues. Founded by Eric Nordhauser and Hazel Hill McCarthy in 2006, and located at 3501 Eagle Rock Boulevard, it was the kind of place locals would pack into on a Friday night to catch musical performances, video art shows hosted by pygmy goats, dance parties, and people in little black wigs doing god knows what. Tonight's send off features performances by Zones favorites James Ferraro and Matthewdavid, in addition to some ghostly electro from Octavius and a plethora of dark dance sounds from DJ M.E. The reasons for the venue's closing have not been publicly disclosed, though it certainly represents the end of a gloriously weird era for the Los Angeles scene. Fortunately, according to an announcement posted on the Show Cave tumblr, a reincarnation may be in the works:
"Thanks to all the amazing artists and people that have made this last year at Show Cave so very fun, weird, abstract, obscure, hilarious, dirty, and danceable. Do not shed too many tears…….Show Cave will continue to live in a new location(s) in a future space and time." --Samantha Cornwell, Visitation Rites

After an extended hiatus, the Don’t Die Wondering live club nights will be making a return in a reincarnated form, in association with friends Beach Creep, at the newly refurbished Shackelwell Arms in Dalston, London. The first night will see performances from Keep Shelly In Athens, Paradise, and dj sets from C Powers, Double Denim Records, Don't Die Wondering, and Beach Creep.
Grecian duo Keep Shelly In Athens made a brilliant introduction early this year with singles "Running Out Of You" and "Hauntin’ Me," coupled with their now sold-out releases from AZ contributing blogs Transparent and Forest Family label (run by Weekly Tape Deck and Gorilla Vs Bear). This second UK show will be a good opportunity to catch their AM-tinged, punch-drunk disco-funk in action.
When we came across East London duo Paradise, our ears instantly perked to their brooding, passionate chants of vampiric youth. Space and reserve play as much a part in these songs as the darkly beautiful melodies that front them, hinting at something grand but just beyond reach.
Our affinity for London-via-Atlanta dance reconfigurer C Powers is well documented. His latest offering is Labour, available as a free download or upcoming CDR from Friendship Bracelet's UUU Tapes, a collated set of tracks from the past year that exhibit his ever evolving technique and production style in one tightly knit package.
Fanning the decks will be esteemed blog colleagues Double Denim Records, Beach Creep and DDW (hi mom!). --Noam Klar, Don't Die Wondering

International Tapes DJs Luke Carrell (aka Simian Gibbons), Coco Zoabi, and Mr. Intl himself set Santos on fire last week while DJing at Prince Rama. This Monday, Intl Tapes will be pressing play all night long between performances from John Maus, Gary War, and Holy Shit. In case you haven't heard, Monday's like the new Thursday, so there's no reason not to rage on this night of hypnagogic OGs.
If you haven't seen J Maus(cis) before, you simply must. I haven't seen anyone put more into a performance than this man; the dude goes crazy and practically has a breakdown on stage. Gary War have also be killing it recently too, their Police Water EP on Sacred Bones is top knotch and totally flew under the radar last year. It's the type of album that, years from now, could be looked back on as a cult classic. But don't be surprised if you see something really special from San Francisco's Holy Shit later this year, the Myspace® page alludes to being signed to True Panther (Teengirl Fantasy, Ty Segall, Outer Limits Recordings), Gloriette Records (Nite Jewel, Ariel Pink), and Japanese label Big Love (Salem, Puro Instinct, The Samps). Plus, for all of you fashion nuts out there, Holy Shit has the most amazing t-shirts.
But everyone knows that no party is a party without an afterparty, which will star DJ blog duo Weird Magic, who's kept it goin' all night long with Oneohtrix Point Never, Gatekeeper, and Greatest Hits in the past. It's gonna be intense. --Ric Leichtung, International Tapes
