Altered Zones is proud to present some photo memories of our unofficial CMJ showcase at the New Museum last Saturday:
Dive

The shimmering melody, slow-charge riffage, unprocessed percussion, and winding vocals of Dive’s sound on their lead single “Sometime” lies closer to creator Cole Smith’s main gig, Beach Fossils, and Virginia’s Wild Nothing. But in this live clip captured by grossymmetric at Brooklyn's 285 Kent, the sonic elements are more distinguishable and captivating, separated from their emulsified state on the 7" recording. --Mark Craig, Altered Zones
Grab the Sometime 7" from Captured Tracks; stay tuned for another 7" and an EP coming soon

This Saturday, October 22nd, Altered Zones is throwing an unofficial CMJ party at the the New Museum. Inspired by the idea of setting some of our favorite artists from the DIY music world in the museum context, we've teamed with our parent site, Pitchfork, to put together a line-up of AraabMuzik, Grimes, Teengirl Fantasy, Trash Talk, Eric Copeland, Prince Rama, Light Asylum, Xeno and Oaklander, FORMA, and Dive, not to mention a killer stable of DJs, including Awesome Tapes From Africa, Weird Magic, Todd Pendu, Main Attrakionz, and Ayshay.
Visuals will be curated by Nuit Blanche New York, will feature Alice Cohen, Grouper's Liz Harris, Luke Wyatt, Miko Revereza, Camilla Padgitt-Coles, and more. The New Museum, our city's only museum devoted exclusively to contemporary art, will be donating a portion of the proceeds to the 2012 New Museum triennial, which is an international exhibition of emerging artists.

Last week we dropped "Sometime," the premiere recording from Brooklyn's Dive-- a Can-inspired four-piece fronted by Beach Fossils guitarist Cole Smith. The track sounded like a decidedly grayer version of Smith's other band, with downbeat post-punk leanings and more strongly ringing guitars. Here, Beach Fossils bandmate John Pena remixes the track under his solo moniker Heavenly Beat. The result pushes "Sometime" under thick and repetitive sci-fi thuds, coldly recalling the Wierd Records aesthetic with its shuttering, mechanic drums. --Jenn Pelly, Altered Zones
There is something concise about newly formed projects that are pieced together from other bands: they know what they want from their sound. To that effect, Brooklyn's Dive is made up of Beach Fossils guitarist Cole Smith, Devin Ruben Perez, Andrew Bailey, and ex-Smith Westerns drummer Colby Hewitt. Influences could canvas an entire avant-garde/post-punk section at your neighborhood record store, but I'll try to break it down. The band mentions Can to account for their steadfast beat, though I'm sure Faust would have something to say about this as well, ringing guitar tones included. Visually the band tracked this up to Harry Everett Smith's Early Abstractions, a seemingly natural combination. --Ryan Ellis, Weekly Tape Deck
Dive is set to release two seven-inches on Captured Tracks on Oct. 11th and November 29th, with an EP coming this December
