Deptford Goth's love for all things '90s is clear: he sampled pop mainstay and glitter princess Mariah Carey in his track "Real Love Fantasy," and his Myspace page features an image of a hard-partying Naomi Campbell in stilettos, fishnets, and black leather booty shorts.
"No Man," the latest track from off his upcoming Merok EP, Youth II, seems to be an homage to another great '90s icon-- the minimal, chilled-out ambience, deadened vocals and sparse piano noodlings of "No Man" is strikingly reminiscent of Moby's "Porcelain," which itself samples Ernest Gold's "Fight for Survival." The track has a mournful, soulful tone akin to gospel music with a trip-hop edge. Accompanied by steady and unhurried drum clips, the London producer Daniel Woolhouse's voice never rises above a mumbled whisper. --Jasmine Zhu, Altered Zones
The Youth II EP drops October 17 on Merok Records

Our boy down south, Deptford Goth, returns briefly ahead of his debut EP for Merok (slated for later this year) in order to drop about a million ideas on the chirpy, cut and paste electro-pop of "The End Of Time" by Computer Magic. Proving himself almost as good and intriguing a remixer as he is a songwriter, here Goth pitch-twists the pretty but straight-up vocals of the original until they're sinister in their pixie-like innocence. The mutation is then dipped deep in a dream-- glacial synth strobes, mysterious low-end rumble, bracing thunderclap drum snaps, and some lost harp twills come together with an unlikely and beautiful seamlessness. --Jack Shankly, Transparent
MP3: Computer Magic: "End of the World (Deptford Goth Remix)"
Computer Magic's The End Of Time is out now on Roundtable; look for Deptford Goth's debut EP on Merok soon.
London's Don't Die Wondering just got some new, flame-centric digital skin. To celebrate, this hub for bizarre, hybrid electronica of all wave shapes has put together a SoundCloud mix of some MP3 highlights from its 2 years of existence, and a short reflection on what it means to live in a "Tumblereality." Tracklisting after the jump. --Emilie Friedlander, Altered Zones
"In Tumblreality, the only thing that is real is the tumble. Posts tumble like real troopers in a sequential line in a blue boxed exodus out of sight into the comfort zone of other pages. Songs I’ve loved on pages 5, 19 and 33, in the next few days will tumble to pages 7, 21 and 35, respectively. Rediscovering a post page 97, the bandwidth of which is now long expired, can bring an unexpected tear to the eye, like finding a dusty old yearbook in the attic. The point here is not to get all teary eyed but rather to coin the term Tumblereality, as well as to say that DDW is now on SoundCloud. Here’s a mix to inaugurate it, of some favorite songs and artists I’ve had the privilege of sharing here over the last year or so. Thanks to all the artists included. And thanks to Linda Jarvis for the new blog design."
