The Petticoats: "I'm Free" (1980)

The Petticoats is the solo project of Berlin-via-London punk-feminist veteran Stef Petticoat, who played in Necessary Evil, Amy and the Angels, and 69 LIES (as STEF PUSSYCOAT). Petticoat self-released her rare self-titled 7" in 1980 on Bla Bla Bla Records. The b-side, "I'm Free," is an amazing, red and raw punk manifesto that starts off a bit rough. Uncoordinated. Slow. But after a minute passes and the fire has time to burn, the song kicks into high gear and Stef's tongue twisters leave you behind. In some places the punker's percussive, vocally acrobatic delivery evokes Nicki Minaj's equally manic verse in "Bottom's Up." Someone please reissue this 7". --Ric Leichtung, International Tapes
