Selcuk Alagöz: "Bahçeye İndim Ki"

This 1967 Turkish oldie delivered itself when I was randomly sticking together genres on Youtube in the search for "something else". Needless to say, this bizarre-yet-familiar blend of psychedelic surf rock and samba is definitely subject to some questioning. Alagöz, based at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, created a rare, East-meets-West hybrid of traditional Anatolian folk and '60s pop. It’s a shame that the entire Turkish garage scene was completely overshadowed by another band that emerged in that era (a band from England, called The Beatles). There isn’t much information about Selcuk out there, but his sister, Rana Alagöz, apparently went on to record a ton of albums throughout the '70s with Selcuk and his backing band. --Devin Ruben Perez, International Tapes
