Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Andrew Cowie's outfit Angel Eyes meshes steady rhythm with weaving drone in his debut full-length cassette on Not Not Fun, consisting of drifting compositions that tiptoe the line between the familiar and the unknown. Cowie captures the more mellow side of his country’s ocean vibes with sounds evocative of a chilly, late-August sunset. After two minutes of solemn, almost meloncholic synths and guitar, Cowie’s voice emerges, distant but strong, echoing from deep inside an oceanic cave and eventually resolving to a harmony of many-layered vocals wrapped in gentle instrumental tones. As the cold of winter approaches, Dire Dish is the perfect soundtrack to listen to while watching The Endless Summer in super slow motion in lamentation of warm weather’s end. --Laura Brown, International Tapes
