Nick Ray is best known for his '80s youth evocation project, Speculator, but he recently came out with a new project called Cool Angels. Demure, out soon on Gnar Tapes, is his first release under the moniker, and it weaves wistful landscapes into a blanket of pop and tape hiss. The production is comparable to Speculator's, but the product favors a more delicate atmosphere of intimacy and contemplation. Gauzy vocal contributions by Young Prisms' Stef Hodapp and Boy Friend's Christa Palazzolo push you further into recline while chaperoning in even more static and tranquility. --Mark Craig, Altered Zones
