Altered Zones

This elevated, next-dimension cruise-pop cut by San Francisco's Air Surgeon has had us reeling all week. The sweeping melody, liquid structure, and feather-light production of "Jem" is probably the best introduction to the fluorescent universe of looney crooner Jarrod W., a true architect of anomaly. The five songs on his MySpace have a compositional sophistication that belies their patchwork nature, melding beyond-the-red lounge smoothies, spaced-out asylum operatics, and proggy techno wigouts into surprisingly suave pocket-pop odysseys.
