Altered Zones

Following a string of solid EPs over the past couple of years, culminating in last year's standout Stridulum release, Zola Jesus has announced that she has a new record due out October 4th through Sacred Bones. "Vessel" is the first single off Conatus, and again displays the harrowing, neo-gothic quality of Nika Roza Danilova's voice, along with her unconventional melodic sensiblity and amazing range. Accompanied by a sparse chord progression on the piano, her vocals would have been just as haunting without the flickering electronics and icy drum line she has shot through it. Even when surrounded by all this movement, however, the song retrains a strange feeling of emptiness and introspection.
