Duck Doom Duck: Hamburger Headphones

When the shambolic, half-broken beat of the curiously named "Hamburger Headphones", by the even more curiously named Teeeth side project Duck Doom Duck, rolls out of the gate and starts to gather steam, a touch of wistful but vaguely spastic psychedelia descends on the proceedings. And as bizarrely catchy hooks begin to take shape in a sort of shuddery day-glo landscape of half tones and shuffling beat collisions, it becomes clear that this track is both catchy as hell and mysteriously unplaceable. Boredoms in psychedelic splatter mode, maybe? Not spazzy enough. '60s revival electronica? Too shattered. But it's the broken sounding edges that belie the inner workings of this music, which was edited together out of tiny fragments of ultra lo-fi live jams that were first recorded with Normal Rock Instruments™ to a 4-track, then broken back out via the all-powerful Computer, creating an entirely new sound that evokes an endless cartwheel through a bed of Murakami's freakishly grinning flowers. --Arturo Darvishire, Altered Zones
