Building on a past genre requires that an artist pay homage to its sound while scouring for new paths and possibilities. Ggle Highs does this stupendously; the long intro to “Shimmering Immers” is an arresting medley of synths, building slowly with dancy additives here and there and a soft low voice, used briefly but effectively. Ggle Highs wear their influences on their sleeves --from the squealing experimentation of post-punks This Heat to the gamut of minimal wave bands that have recently been reissued. Nevertheless, it's what's upgraded, not emulated, that sets Ggle Highs apart. --Ryan Ellis, Weekly Tape Deck
